The Beauty of Black Life
Project Description
Christine Alcindor created "The Beauty of Black Life" - a set of two portable murals that represent being Black in America. The murals are painted on wooden panels that can move to any location. Both murals shed light on the Black experience, the Black Lives Matter Movement, and the beauty of being Black. The first includes the Black Power fist which has been adopted by the Black Lives Matter Movement. The first is filled with names of people who have shaped the movement; the names represent the evolution of the movement itself, and how long we have been fighting. The second mural includes a person in profile wearing a ‘Natural’ hairstyle. Within the hair, there are several smaller paintings that illustrate Black life and the goals we have for the future. Both murals include vibrant colors that express the pride, love, and joy within the Black community amidst all the hardships we face.
Artist Bio
Christine Alcindor (she/her) is a musician, actress, artist, and writer from Dorchester. She is a proud Haitian-American Black woman who likes to express herself, her beliefs, and her culture through various art forms, whether that be through her art, her music, or the stories she creates. She is a senior at Beaver Country Day School who is passionate about Black issues and celebrating all the beauty being Black encompasses. She is also extremely passionate about STEM and finding ways to make it more accessible to people of color. With everything currently going on in the world, Christine's main goal has been finding ways to give back to her community, make her voice heard, and represent Black people and all that has been endured.
“Being black, especially being a black woman, isn’t often celebrated. Black women’s voices are often censored. With everything going on in the world right now, I want to find a way to give back to my community, make my voice heard, and celebrate and represent Black people and all we’ve endured. I want to do this by using something I love - which is creating art.”
